The repo workspace and commit graph

Preview documentation About this guide ⓘ

GitTrail is in preview: commands and features may change before the first release, and host integrations are still being tested against each live service.

Chapter 10 of 29
On this page

In this chapterRead your commit graph and find the actions for branches and commits.

Open a repo with Graph. The header shows the repo, the current branch (click to switch or create one), ● N changed when you have uncommitted changes (click for Changes), the account, and Fetch plus the main action (Push, Pull or Publish) with its count. Tabs below: History, Changes, Issues, Insights, Pull requests.

The commit graph

  • Colourful lanes for branches, with branch and tag labels and merged-PR badges. Only visible rows are drawn, so huge repos stay fast.
  • Columns: show or hide author, time and commit id; relative times or dates; an overview strip to jump around.
  • Commit preview: rest the pointer on a commit’s message to see the whole message, author and changed files.
  • Commit details: click a commit for its author, date, message, files and each file’s change, its signature status, and links. #123, !45 and ABC-12 in messages link to the host, Jira or Linear.
  • Fork point: pick a branch in the sidebar to grey out the history before it split from main, so its own commits stand out.

Drag and drop

Drag Onto Result
A branch Another branch Merge, rebase, squash, fast-forward, or open a pull request
A commit A branch Cherry-pick
A commit Another commit Squash them
A stash A branch Apply the stash there
A branch Worktrees Open it in its own folder
A file (from Changes) The sidebar Stash just that file

Undo and redo everything

Every change to branches and history can be undone (up to 30 steps, Undo ▾), and redone with Ctrl+Y.

Several commits at once

Ctrl+click or Shift+click commits to pick several: see their combined changes (including your uncommitted work, when the picks reach your current commit), cherry-pick, revert, squash or move them, or export them as patches or as one patch.

Type text, or use operators: author:jane, message:fix, sha:a1b2, file:src/app.ts, change:"TODO", since:7d, until:2026-09-30 (dates, or 7d, 2w, 3m, today, yesterday).

More

  • Hide, solo, pin and focus branches.
  • Command palette (Ctrl+K): find any action, branch or repo.
  • Instant refresh when files change on disk.
  • Export the history as an image, or any version as a zip.
